Teotihuacan is often referred to as the City of the Gods as this was the name given by the Aztecs, as they considered it to be the place where the current world was created. However, the Aztecs are not considered to be the founders of this magical city, and its true origin still remains to be a mystery to archaeologists. With such perplexity surrounding the city and its incredible constructions, it is no wonder that many people flock to Teotihuacan to see this historical wonder for themselves. The Avenue of the Dead is the name given to the road that leads down the centre of the construction complex, as the mounds on either side give one the impression that they are tombs. The Pyramid of the Sun is the largest pyramid in Teotihuacan, situated to the east of the Avenue of the Dead and a main attraction to visitors.

Perhaps the most impressive construction of the entire city is the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl, which is found on the south-western corner of the Plaza of the Moon. This impressive palace displays fine paintings, carvings and pillars, many of which resemble a mythical bird – assumed to be Quetzalpapalotl – from which the Palace received its name.

The most highly recommended option is to book a full day tour of the entire city, which allows a complete experience of Teotihuacan. Day tours give tourists the opportunity to climb the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, as well as to see the Avenue of the Dead and the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl. As the city itself is located just one hour northeast of Mexico City, the journey is relatively easy for tourists traveling from the Capital. In addition to this, Teotihuacan also offers a selection of hotels to suit the needs of any traveller coming from further afield and looking to make the most of their trip in this ancient city.
