So, you have just booked your flights to Mexico for what you hope to be an unforgettable holiday, and now you are beginning to think about the necessary preparation beforehand. Well, the good news is that you need not look any further! In this article I have highlighted what I believe to be the 5 main things to prepare and take with you as you explore one of the most interesting and beautiful countries in the world.
Of course, when travelling to a foreign country, one thing that must take priority is that you are medically fit for travel. International health organizations recommend Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid for any traveler in Mexico. Diphtheria and Rabies vaccines should also be considered. However, there is no need to worry about getting a Yellow Fever vaccination, as no certificate is required to enter the country. On the other hand, if you are looking to travel to other countries in Central and South America afterwards, this certificate may be required upon entry depending on their respective laws, so its worth checking for your whole trip beforehand.
2. A suitcase full of appropriate clothing
When thinking about the weather in Mexico, one might assume that it’s always hot. Well, if you thought this, you’re mistaken! Mexico is a large country, so the weather can vary massively, and furthermore, the country has two very distinct seasons. Mexico’s rainy season starts in May and continues until October. Therefore, be prepared for rainfall with warm clothing and waterproof jackets, as they will be of great use! If you come during the rest of the year, you can expect little to no rain and sunny days, so make sure to pack accordingly! Furthermore, if you are keen on hiking, don’t forget to pack hiking boots and clothing, as Mexico is home to the highest volcano and 3rd highest peak in North America, called the Pico de Orizaba. If this trek tickles your fancy, hiring a mountain guide is easy and will be sure to give you an unforgettable experience with astounding views of the surroundings.
Lastly, make sure that your swimsuit is packed. Not only is Mexico home to idyllic sandy beaches and beautiful blue seas, but there are also many astounding cenotes, which are definitely worth a visit! There are tons beach activities on offer throughout Mexico, from coral reef snorkeling in Cozumel to luxury day boat trips in Cancún. There are also lots of tour providers that offer the chance to swim and dive in the cenotes, giving you the opportunity to experience these natural wonders first-hand.

Taking a camera with you on your trip to Mexico is highly recommended. In addition to the beautiful scenery previously mentioned, Mexico also has some incredible historical buildings, dating back to its Mayan and Aztec inhabitants. Therefore, a camera is a necessary piece of equipment to capture these impressive historical structures and document your trip. In particular, a worthwhile trip would be to Chichen Itza, one of the most famous ancient Mayan cities with the well-known El Castillo dominating the centre of the archaeological site.
4. Spanish phrase book
Although English is widely spoken throughout Mexico, it isn’t guaranteed that everyone you speak to on your trip will understand you. Therefore, I would recommend packing a small Spanish phrase book to help you on your way. Maybe even try to learn some Mexican slang to make friends with the locals – chela is beer and wey is the most common way of saying mate: be prepared to hear this a lot!
5. Download TheBesty Mobile App on your phone
In order to make the most of your trip and have it run as smoothly as possible, be sure to have TheBesty downloaded on your phone. TheBesty allows you to quickly and easily browse and book fun activities in Mexico, as well as keeping you updated with the latest local events.
